Placement Exam

Saturday, December 1, 2018 (8:45am-12:30pm)

LOCATION Cardinal Newman High School, Athletic Convocation Center (ACC)

$125.00 Exam Fee (on the exam day please bring check payable to Cardinal Newman or cash) Please bring your own #2 pencil; calculators may NOT be used.

Snacks are provided. Students with food allergies should bring their own snacks. This exam is for 8th grade students applying to Cardinal Newman for the 9th grade. Students applying as transfers do not need to take this exam.

This is a “placement exam” not an entrance exam, there is no passing or failing. Taking a standardized test is a skill, and some people are better at it than others. Sometimes, it is very reflective of your abilities and sometimes it is not. We will be looking at grades and past test scores to see where your ability lies. The Placement Exam is an additional factor to help determine academic placement.

There are five sections to this test: Verbal, Quantitative, Reading, Mathematics, Language. At the end, you will be writing an essay. The essay will be read by our English department to distinguish what level of English you will take. Please take your time doing this. It is not so much the content of what you write, as it is your structure and grammar usage. It should be 3-5 paragraphs. Keep topic sentences, paragraphs, commas, periods and complete sentences in mind. You have as much time as you want to complete the essay.

There will be extended time; be sure to email if your student currently receives extra time on standardized tests and complete this Academic Support Center Application.
