Cardinal Newman High School Community Update

November 22, 2017

A Message from President Laura M. Held:

On behalf of your faculty, staff and administrators, I extend our warmest greetings to each of you and your families as we take time to enjoy and rest during this Thanksgiving Holiday. Perhaps even more so this year, we celebrate the goodness of coming together with family and friends. May your Thanksgiving Day offer a reminder to be generous with others while remaining grateful for the many gifts we are blessed with through God's love for us.

Our facility plan timeline for re-entry to the campus is listed below. Additionally, we are working diligently to gather research options for the need to replace the baseball turf, bleachers and batting cage structure. As this planning is better defined we will certainly keep you posted in future weekly information.

- Laura M. Held, President

A Message from Principal Graham Rutherford:

Dear Parents, May the blessings and love to be found in Thanksgiving be with your family; we have much to be thankful for despite the losses and strains we have been under since the fires arrived. May you be graced with time together if possible, and may health be good for us all. To celebrate in our usual way, we will have Wednesday off from school to do service in the community; this gives us the chance to do something we want to do but don't always have time to do. Please make sure your daughter or son writes up what their service was, reflect upon its value, and turn it in to their Religion teacher when back on the 27th. Faculty will be doing the same as we are all called to service. This is a tremendous community gift and it can be done any time during these five days off.

The Finals Schedule is being shared ahead to help with planning. We have reduced it to three days, December 18th and 19th primarily and the 20th for some, certain departments are choosing projects in lieu of tests. Some will also be only giving a unit test, not a comprehensive one, such as Science traditionally does. We have tried to minimize the stress involved in this and still retain academic standards.

Our second semester will begin with only the teachers returning on January 8th, Monday. Students will start on Wednesday the 10th if all continues to go well with our campus cleanup and placement of portables. As we will not have Intersession on Thursday and Friday, we can use the two days ahead. The two day delay for students will allow teachers to set up classrooms and get ready for a different alignment. Please make the adjustment to calendars and schedules.

Graham Rutherford, Principal
