The Buhagiar Brothers, Josh '99, Jordan '01, and Jason '03 keep busy, but make time for family and fun. I recently ran into them together at Russian River Brewery in Windsor on a Sunday afternoon, a place where I see many Alum parents and graduates. All three are well and active, just as in school, finding success and supporting others. | Keenan McCullough, '03 Keenan McCullough, '03, established MP Law with Alex Purtill. They have comprehensive experience advising private equity and strategic clients on M&A transactions across a wide variety of industries. Prior to founding MP Law, Keenan worked in the Private Equity and M&A group at Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP and then at a regional law firm, where he established a practice counseling large sponsors and their portfolio companies. Keenan is also a Certified Public Accountant and possesses the tax, accounting and financial literacy required to be a key advisor to his clients. Recently, he hosted a CN senior who is interested in law as part of Mrs. Eggleston's Life Skills Class. |

Jamie Decker, '07 Jamie Decker, '07, after looking for a career change two years ago, decided to try the California DMV. He is working at the Santa Rosa office and says he sees lots of people he knows all the time. I know because I saw him when I went to renew my license, which made the experience a joy. While they are still very busy, things are running better than ever with an improved appointment schedule and people like Jamie making a difference. |

Chef Charlie Palmer; Brady and Clay Mauritson |
| Project Zin is an incredible annual event hosted by Chef Charlie Palmer, father of four CN graduates, and Winemaker Clay Mauritson, '93, of Mauritson Wines. The event benefits the Down Syndrome Association North Bay, an organization near and dear to Clay's heart and his son Brady. The Project Zin Team is hard-working and outdoes itself every year. Like last year, Project Zin was held at Bricoleur Vineyards — a fabulous event, raising funds for such a vital charity. Clay also came to guest speak with our Agricultural Biology class this past semester, to help students better understand farming and careers. |

Kara Groom, '10 - One of The PD's "23 to Look for in '23" Kara Groom, '10, named as one of "23 to Look for in '23" by The Press Democrat for her Kara Marie Wine label. According to them: She is dauntless as a winemaker, leaping into the popular world of natural wine with her pét-nat enterprise. Pét-nat is an abbreviation for "pétillant naturel," a French term that roughly translates to "naturally sparkling." She makes a natural Riesling sparkler and said "each year I try to push the envelope a little more towards natural and, dare I say, trendy."

John Contreras After 25 years of teaching and Service leadership, including founding and developing the CBSL program, John Contreras is now working with Social Advocates for Youth (SAY), the long-established Santa Rosa program. He continues to support and be a resource for current teachers and past students, a living example of service learning. |
| Jack Killeen, in his 30th year as a CN teacher, also has a long record of other work in the school. As our Water Polo Coach for many years, he built the program up in the 90's; he also coached swimming and wrestling, doing 40 seasons in the three sports. He was the ASB moderator along with Julie Meyer at Ursuline for several years and has been the Math Department Chair since 2006. An area less known is his seven years of volunteer work with The Marine Mammal Center. He works on the Wednesday night Topside crew, feeding all of the animals on site, administering any medications needed, and cleaning the 22 pens. The busy season starts in late February and March with elephant seal pups. Sea lions and fur seals start showing up in numbers later, often in June and beyond. Fun fact: 90% of sea lions are born in June; the slow season occurs in the months of October - December. The hours of each shift can range from 3 to 8 hours (6-8 hours when they have 150 - 200+ animals). His daughter Cassie, '18, did her CBSL with the MMC, a great chance for them to share time and a mutual interest. |

| Cyndi Niendorf Recently, Mrs. Niendorf, former Dean of Academics at Ursuline, dropped by campus to say hello. Throughout her 25 years at Ursuline, she helped thousands of students navigate the college admissions process. After retiring, Mrs. Niendorf started her own business as a private college counselor, continuing to support many of our students. We are so thankful she stopped by! | CELEBRATING GRAHAM RUTHERFORD'S 40TH ANNIVERSARY AT THIS YEAR'S LEGACY GALA |
|
|
Our 2023 Spring Legacy Gala Celebrates Graham Rutherford's 40th Anniversary at Cardinal Newman! The ultimate alumni, Graham Rutherford is a graduate of CNHS's Class of 1977. After graduation, he remained connected to the school as a teacher and coach as he pursued a degree at Santa Clara University and earned his Master's Degree in History and Teaching from the Queen's University of Belfast. He returned to Cardinal Newman in 1985 as a full-time teacher and coach, and his commitment to the school and commitment to growth created a widely varied path within our hallways. Over the past 40 years, Graham has taught 8 different subjects, coached 4 different sports, and led a variety of sport and service trips to different points across the globe. He has held (so far!) 7 different positions, leading the school as the Admissions Director, the Dean of Students, and the Dean of Student life. He also holds the record for the longest-tenured Principal in Cardinal Newman history (2004-2018). He continues to touch lives daily in his current role as Alumni Director, and we hope to celebrate many more years in the future. We hope you will all join us, in person or in spirit, at this year's Gala to raise a glass in honor of the many ways Graham has made an impact at CNHS. |

REMEMBERING THOSE WHO PASSED |
|
|
Deaths in 2022: Greg Stalker, '72, passed away on September 16th from complications caused by cancer. Greg was born in Santa Rosa, living there until his retirement a few years ago, when he moved with the love of his life, his wife Elizabeth, to Prescott Valley, Arizona. Greg was a big CN supporter and was always at the Gala Dinners, Crab Feeds, and Fun in the Fall dinners. He also always attended the reunions of the Class of '72, where he got a chance to be with his many friends from St. Eugene's, St. Rose, Cardinal Newman, and Ursuline. Sadly, he was too ill to attend the recent 50-year reunion in early September. Greg is survived by his wife Elizabeth, sons Nicholas and Charles, his siblings, many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by some very dear friends including Ken Molinaro, Chuck Reilly, and Pam Bell Simmons. Please remember Greg with a donation to Cardinal Newman in his name. |

Tom Patrick, '75, a Navy veteran, lived with the difficult limits from an accident that limited his mobility but he kept his spirit strong. His family was his support and he theirs; his untimely passing gave both sadness and celebration for the person he was. |

John Crowe, '81, died Jan 3rd, 2023 after an extended battle with cancer; tough to the end, John lived out his life with care for others and enthusiasm. A life of adventure and discovery. |

| Augustin F. Nieto, '77, and a Marine Corps Vet, died October 2nd. He is survived by his five children and eight grandchildren; services were held October 8th at St. John, Healdsburg, and a reception after at Our Lady of Guadalupe, Windsor. Augie was kind-hearted, enthusiastic, and involved at CN, playing football as a senior on the 12-0 NCS and NBL champions, and being part of the 47-game win streak teams. Donations would go to the Alum scholarship in his name. |

Kirk Brandt, '02, died unexpectedly from an automobile accident; after a week on life support, the family honoured his previously made decision to become an organ donor if he could not survive off such machines. His gifts helped many people in need; please consider choosing organ donations by marking your driver's license ahead. |
Devin Mansen, '18, tragically died while doing something he loved, riding his motorcycle up by Lake Sonoma. The call of the outdoors and things mechanical helped define his interests, as was the importance of his family. His memorial service was on January 21st. |
| Aysia Dural, '21, lost to us in March; a gentle soul, a fierce competitor, a friend to many, and beloved by her family, who she cared for deeply. |

On Friday, January 27, CNHS celebrated the groundbreaking of our chapel on the Feast Day of Saint Angela Merici, foundress of the Ursuline Order. This student-led celebration focused on the words of Meghan Snyder, Kate Wheadon, and Emily Wood while recognizing Theo Ranney's summer internship with GMH Builders. This was a wonderful way to end our week, and I would like to thank Kathleen Aymar, Principal of St. Rose, for joining us at the groundbreaking. The ceremony was led by students who set a tone of gratitude and renewal, thanking all those who made this moment possible and reflecting on the opportunity to rebuild all that was lost. Our students see the new chapel as a symbol of the unification of school life and faith. Junior Meghan Snyder said it best in her dedication speech: "As a junior here at Newman I have seen this school in many phases. For a while during my time at St. Rose I saw the "pre-fire Newman", then devastatingly, I saw the Newman we all love wiped away by the Tubb's fires. Through all my time here, our beloved school has been under construction, trying to rebuild a greater version of what it once was. But that's all thanks to the very generous donors who made this possible! Without them we wouldn't be here today celebrating the new notable addition to our campus. I'm so grateful to be able to stand before you all and see the start of a new chapter for this school. The building of this chapel is something so special and significant not just for our school, but for our Newman community. This chapel is a representation of the unification of our school life and faith. It rests as a symbol of resilience after the fires and a sacred place of worship. It lies in the center of our campus lifting our hearts and spirits up to God." What makes this chapel in particular so remarkable is that it's our school's first student chapel! It will act as an outlet to revive our faith and restore hope into our spiritual life. The gift of this chapel is truly a blessing and we're so fortunate to be able to have it here!" |
