Message from Principal Reynolds
Happy Friday, Cardinal Newman High School. As you prepare for a 49-hour-weekend (clocks roll back Sunday at 2 am), know that next week is a four-day school week for your student. The schedule rotation is B-Day, C-Day, D-Day, and E-Day. Thursday, the 10th of November, is an early release day as the faculty and staff of CNHS will celebrate its Thanksgiving Luncheon. Our no-school Friday, the 11th of November is in recognition of Veteran's Day.
We are currently experiencing more absences due to illness than normal. This is not COVID-related but rather an uptick in common colds and other ordinary conditions. Since the 24th of October, we have averaged 46 illness-related absences per day, or 8% of our student population. Normally, CNHS illness-related absences are in the mid-20s. Right now, there's no action to take. Just be aware of the increase and take the necessary precautions to protect family members who may be vulnerable.
Consider some of the practices used during the pandemic:
- Stay home if sick, coughing, or sneezing
- Take a COVID test - rapid tests are available through Mr. Gilson if interested
- Wash your hands frequently
- Keep a safe distance from others when possible
If your student is ill and must remain home, contact Ms. Lane at 707-546-6470 *107. This allows CNHS to maintain accurate attendance records related to illness. Also, if your student is ill for multiple days and saw their doctor, please bring in a doctor's note.
We continue to monitor illness-related absences and will inform you again if conditions merit. In the meantime, stay hydrated, have nutritious meals, and get a good night's rest. On Wednesday, the 2nd of November, we began our school day with the following prayer.
Dear God, as I lay down to sleep, relax my body's tension; calm the restlessness of my mind; still, the thoughts which worry and perplex me. Help me to rest myself and all my problems in your strong and loving arms. Let your Spirit speak to my mind and heart while I am asleep so that, when I wake up in the morning, I may find that I have received in the night-time light for my way, strength for my tasks; peace for my worries; forgiveness for my sins. Grant me sleep tonight and tomorrow power to live.
Many blessings upon you and yours, Nicholas Reynolds
