Math Skills Mastery

A workshop designed to strengthen and build confidence in math skills.

Cardinal Newman High School’s Math Skills Mastery Summer Course helps students strengthen core math foundations and prepare for future coursework through focused instruction and guided practice. Students will review essential concepts, build confidence, and improve problem-solving skills with the support of experienced instructors. This course will feature a variety of drills and exercises tailored to help students gain confidence and proficiency. 

Grade(s): Admitted Rising 9th graders
Dates: June 8th - June 18th* (Monday-Thursday)
*No class on June 12th and June 19th

Read, Write, Refresh

A workshop focused on enhancing reading and writing skills.

Cardinal Newman High School’s Read, Write, Refresh Summer workshop is designed to equip you with essential skills for success in 9th-grade English and beyond.

We will dive into two captivating texts: The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis and The Wanderings of Odysseus by Rosemary Sutcliff (required summer reading for all incoming freshmen).

Through these rich narratives, students will enhance their analytical reading and writing skills, refine their speaking abilities, and master the art of annotation. We will focus on essay construction, effective communication, and research techniques, culminating in the preparation and writing of a comprehensive research paper.

Luminary League

A workshop for students interested in AP and Honors pathways.

Make the most of the Cardinal Newman experience by charting your path with guidance and intention. Students will learn how to identify and pursue a passion that can shape their high school journey.

Led by Interim Co-Principal, Dr. Berry, and a team of accomplished students, this program helps incoming freshmen explore opportunities that can build a distinctive foundation for college and future careers. In a seminar-style setting, students will discuss, research, write, reflect, and share their aspirations. Our goal is to form a supportive cohort that encourages one another’s goals throughout their high school years.

Grade(s): Rising 9th and 10th graders

Summer Course Offerings 2026

Geometry

Full Year Credit, Intensive Course. Complete a full Geometry Course this summer (10 credits).

This intensive summer course allows students to complete a full year (10 credits) of Geometry. This course meets the UC/CSU Mathematics (c) course requirement. The Geometry textbook is provided for this course. 

Registration closes June 1, 2026

Grades: Rising 9th-12th
Dates: Thursday, June 4th to Tuesday, June 30th*
*No class on June 19th

Credits: 10

Prerequisites:  Current Students: Grade of B or higher in Algebra I.  Incoming students: Must pass the Math Challenge exam.  For information about this exam, please contact admissions@cardinalnewman.org.

College Application Essay Workshop

Find Your Voice for the College Essay. Develop a compelling personal story and a strong draft through guided workshops and expert feedback.

This two-week summer course will guide students through the process of interpreting college application prompts, brainstorming compelling personal narratives, and crafting well-structured, thoughtful essays.

Through guided workshops, peer feedback, and one-on-one coaching, students will refine their writing style and develop authentic, engaging essays that showcase their unique voices. By the end of the course, students will have a strong draft and the confidence to approach their college applications with clarity and purpose.
