Admissions Policy
The Cardinal Newman community seeks the sons of families who share and support the school’s philosophy. Every person, as a child of God, has an equal dignity and inalienable right to education. Therefore, no qualified boy is denied admission to Cardinal Newman on the basis of race, color, or ethnic origin.
Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the school accepts ninth to twelfth grade students following the successful completion of its admissions process. First priority is given to those students who complete application forms within the prescribed deadline. From this group, those who are the brothers of current or former students, or are the sons of graduates or families who previously supported the school will be admitted if qualified and it is established that they will benefit from Cardinal Newman’s programs.
The most qualified students academically, based on grades, recommendations, test scores, and an interview, are admitted until the freshmen class is filled. When considering students where all of these factors appear relatively equal, Catholic students, especially those from Catholic grade schools, are given preference over those who are non-Catholic. Other qualified students are placed on a waiting list. Students not academically qualified may be refused admission or required to attend Summer School to become qualified at the school’s discretion.
Students applying after publicized deadlines are placed on a space available waiting list. Exception may be made in an effort to accommodate qualified students who move into the area during the summer.
While Cardinal Newman’s standards are high, we believe we offer a supporting, Christian-based school with a positive and active environment. Though each class has several outstanding scholars, the typical Cardinal Newman student is a boy of solid ability who desires to attend college and is willing to do the work that will enable him to achieve his goal. Neither elitist in nature or habit, Cardinal Newman represents all areas of Sonoma County and some places beyond. As a school of choice and a faith-centered community, Cardinal Newman helps develop men of commitment and service.
