Basic Overview Calendar
College Admissions Counseling
- Frosh Interview….What level of classes is the student going to take(college prep, graduation track, honors /AP) ?
- October of Sophomore year….PSAT(practice SAT) and PLAN (practice ACT) tests to see which format is best suited to the student.
- Dec/Jan of Sophomore year…Sophomore planning meeting….focusing on course requests for the following year and the requirements for the type of college the student is shooting for (SAT/ACT scores, GPA and course requirements will be discussed).
- October of Junior year…..PSAT again, this time for National Merit recognition and to see if the testing skills have improved and also to generate mail from colleges. It is important to try as hard as possible on this one so that the counselor can advise the student on how to improve and about which test is best.
- Spring Semester of the Junior Year…..Junior college counseling sessions. In these meetings the students will sit down with the college counselor and put together a list of 5-20 colleges that appear to be the right fit for the student based on his major interests, geographical interests, extra-curriculars, town and school sizes, etc. The goal here is to have the student do some serious research during Easter break and summer vacation on these schools. Visiting the schools personally as well as on-line is obviously encouraged. All of the course requirements and admissions standards are taken into account here to ensure a realistic set of expectations.
- Fall of Senior year….Application meetings are held with the students in Sep/Oct/Nov to assist in the application process. The counseling office is available for the submission of on-line applications. Transcripts are also available there. Students should read the “College Application Procedures” handout that is included in this website for a detailed account of this.
