Congratulations to Mike Nonella, '81 and his crew: The inspectors from CalUltimate Turf declared that the planarity of the field is excellent...it is ready for the installation of turf. This will begin on Monday, August 24th.
Below are several photographs that help demonstrate planarity.

Nearly all of 3,500 tons of gravel have been delivered and spread ...

140,625 sq ft of space for baseball, soccer, lacrosse, football practice, track and field, PE ... all students benefit.

...should we worry that Randy is using duct tape and rope? (At least it's not smoke and mirrors!)

July 30, 2009

Cardinal Newman alumni on campus for a free quarterly lunch. They stopped to pose for a photo during their tour of the new field project. They learned of the work guided by their fellow alum Mike Nonella, CN '81 (not pictured ... absent ... likely unable to respond to the questions of Dick Colombini, CN Guardian Angel for construction!)

"But Dick," says Mike, "this thing says it's level!"

Bill Rousseau, CN '75 helps explain to his classmate Doug Anderson, CN '75 ... while Graham Rutherford, CN '77 (and Principal!) tries to convince Dick Colombini that it is indeed progressing well ... Matt Seghezzi, CN '84 and Chuck Reilly, CN '72 offer their approval of Mike Nonella's good work.

Jerry Robinson, CN '75 and Lance Badger, CN '83 supervise Brad's concrete work at the new pitcher's mound.

... and Jerry Robinson, CN '75 winds up for the first pitch (Don't worry, TJ. It didn't truly count as the first pitch since Jerry only tossed a rock!)

The first base line is on the outside edge of 1st base ... Mike Nonella and crew are getting this right ... never mind the gentle teasing from Dick Colombini!
July 29, 2009

The pitcher's mound has been prepared for concrete curb.

Alumni parent Lance Wright and his colleague Brad install stainless steel bolts to prepare edge for all-weather turf.
July 28, 2009

Mike and Randy consider changing the rules of baseball to allow the pitcher's mound to be 18 inches closer to home plate ... this to accommodate a slight mis-measurement ...

... nevermind ... they moved the mound to the proper distance from home plate. (TJ, don't worry! We've got this under control ... )

Yes, there are plans thanks to the efforts of board member Jack Macy and Carlile - Macy Civil Engineers...
