18th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament
The Cardinal Newman Golf Tournament held on Thursday, May 29th at Windsor Golf Club is a traditional event that brings together people with a passion for golf and a spirit of friendly competition. For the past 18 years, The CN Alumni Association has hosted this annual event to bring alumni, parents and community supporters and support Cardinal Newman students.
Golfers started arriving around 12:00 noon for registration where Tim Meinken gave out their tee-prize of a great looking Cardinal Newman White Golf Polo Shirt sponsored by Alma and Ken Molinaro, ‘72 owners of Blue Seas and Playa del Sol Resorts in Mexico. The Golf Shirts were embroidered with the CN alumni golf tournament logo as well as Blue Seas Resort. Other tee prizes included Nike Golf Balls from Jeff Wear, ’93 of Nike Golf and hats, golf towels and tees compliments of Chris Pederson, ‘93 at First Republic Bank. Charlie’s Grille in the reserved conference room to include a bagged deli lunch before golfers headed out to the course for a shotgun start provided lunch.
Golfers had fun with events happening at 17 of the 18 holes including 7 beverage holes where all the drinks were kept iced and stocked full by Jeff Bertoli ’77, Scott McMillan ’00, and Ryan King. Charlie and Mickey Head of Budweiser/Eagle Distributor and Jim Fisher ’78 of Culligan Water donated beverages.
As golfers made their way around the course, they were treated to a variety of stations to include:
‘Cosmopolitan Hole’ hosted by Warren and Sharon Murphy. Cosmos were served up in jewel-toned glasses by Sharon Murphy, Lexi Murphy UHS ’06, Renee Busalacchi, and Robbie Kelly while wearing feathered boas on hole #12.
“Cigar Hole” On hole #10 golfers were given premeum cigars from The Squire by Dirk Bietau and generously donated by John Jordan ’98. While
“Sausage Hole” Then came the sausage hole #13 where Carol Magliulo, Rhonda Wright and Trish Marshall served up some smok’n hot sausages donated by Ritz Guggiana, ’71 of Ritz Food Service.
“Tequila Shot Hole” hole #5 where Julie Bertoli and Joanne Guanella passed them out to help players with their golf swing. John McNeany, ’76 from Pacific Market, donated the tequila.
“Quesadilla Hole”
Ritz Guggiana, ’71 of Ritz Food Service sponsored both the quesadilla hole #5 and Sausage Hole #13 where Terri Murphy and Karen Young, prepared tasty quesadilla’s for Gayle de Rutte to serve up with a nice cold corona beer.
“Rum-BA Fruit and Sweet Spot Hole” offered tropical fruit skewers dipped in rum on hole #3 to include home made chocolate chip cookies and brownies freshly baked by Kathy Lydon and served up
“Margarita Hole”
Kathleen Huhn, Terri Rook and Kimberly Henderson mixed margaritas and served them up all the while playing Jimmy Buffet.
Although there were many skillful attempts at winning the keys, the 2007 Volvo SUV, donated by Scott Silviera of Angel Motors, will have to wait another year to be driven off by one of our golfers.
Our own CN Golf Team provided hits to golfers on par three holes. Alex Reno (9), Charlie Welch (10), Alex Johnson (10), Corey Robello (10) Zack Duggan (11) and Chris Gregus (11) assisted golfers with shots to help the team’s score.
The live auction that took place after dinner was a rousing success. Our auctioneer, Jack Richardson, alumni parent of Justin Richardson ’98, announced spectacular items.
Pictures of golfers were taken on the course by Dirk Bietau and are available for purchase at www.dirk.com. We thank the golfers, sponsors, volunteers and donors for their support.
