Career Day, Wednesday, October 13, 2010
Keynote Speaker, Christopher Silva, CN '82

Sponsored by the Alumni Association

The Cardinal Newman Alumni Association Committee initiated the annual Career Day program as a way for students to explore possible career choices. In August freshman, sophomore and junior students completed surveys identifying their career interests and will have the opportunity on Wednesday, October 13th to explore potential careers by attending multiple twenty minutes sessions. Each year alumni, parents and community supporters are invited back to campus to share their professional experience with students, helping them decide for or against a career. Career Day is a collaborative effort involving faculty, staff, teachers, counselors, alumni, and community volunteers.

We have confirmed many of the speakers for this year’s Career Day but are still looking for some to fill in where needed. Please contact Roisin Lindsay at Lindsay@cardinalnewman.org or 707-546-6470 ext 116 if you are interested in speaking at this year’s Career Day or submitting your name for future Career Days.

Career Day

Context:
Career Day is offered to freshmen, sophomore and junior students who are limited in their knowledge of real career opportunities, the educational requirements, day-to-day tasks and responsibilities, future outlooks and trends.

Experience:  During Career Day, students choose from a list of over 30 different careers. Students attend several presentations and are given the opportunity to learn about the specifics of these careers and ask questions of the speakers.

Reflection:  Students reflect on the personal stories of the speakers. They learn what it is to be successful in a particular career.  They ask questions of themselves: education, experience, local and national opportunities, salary range, trends etc. Is this new information in line with their earlier expectations and their own future career goals?

Action:  Students gain specific knowledge of careers that might interest them and use this information in their college search and application process. They might also contact alumni to inquire about available internships or shadow opportunities.

Evaluation:  The evaluation process is on going. The knowledge that students gain helps them decide to continue to explore a specific career or change direction all together. We hope that they continue to take advantage of the career counseling offered at CN as well as alumni resources that are available to them.

The next Career Day will be on  Wednesday, October 13, 2010
