Greetings!  My name is Ed Cutler and I’m Cardinal Newman’s Personal Counselor.  I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and provide professional, confidential counseling for our students and their families to address issues that directly affect students’ personal growth and academic progress.

I work with students at all grade levels; many I get to know as freshmen and provide support as needed throughout their four years at Cardinal Newman.  Others I begin working with when they seek help making decisions about their future in their Junior and Senior years.  Much of the work I do with students is akin to being a coach helping them chart and navigate their journey into manhood.

Counseling services include:

  • student support groups
  • consultations with parents
  • crisis intervention and counseling
  • individual counseling
  • coaching in classroom participation, study and test-taking skills
  • training in stress management and relaxation techniques
  • screening assessments to identify students at-risk for learning disabilities
  • coordination of support services for students with special needs and disabilities
    • with teachers and the College Board and ACT
  • assessment, diagnosis and community referrals for ongoing treatment

Some of the more common issues we address include:

  • academic motivation and/or achievement
  • social and relationship skills
  • life decisions and transitions (e.g. starting high school, dating, driving, friendships, etc)
  • life-stage developmental issues
  • relations with parents and other family members
  • peer relations and pressures
  • learning disabilities
  • anger management
  • substance abuse and other addictions
  • low self-esteem and/or self reliance
  • emotional and psychological distress (e.g. anxiety, depression, sense of inadequacy)
  • thought disorders

I encourage you all to take full advantage of the comprehensive counseling services offered by Cardinal Newman’s Counseling Department.  Parents, students and teachers can make referrals should they be concerned about a friend, student or family member.  You can reach me at 707-546-6470 ext. 113 or email me at cutler@cardinalnewman.org.
